Virginia 529 Savings Plans

To ensure maximum financial benefit from your Prepaid529 plan when receiving scholarships or grants designated for tuition only, consideration should be given to the level of benefits being accessed. You may want to contact Virginia529 (1-888-567-0540) to review plan options for covering other non-tuition educational costs such as room and board.

The maximum amount Prepaid529 will pay is in-state undergraduate tuition, library, technology and comprehensive fees capped at the full-time Blacksburg campus rate (12 hours).

If you are a participant in a Virginia529 plan, there are two ways to have your tuition paid:

Option 1: Prepaid529 (In-state tuition and fees only)

  1. Submit an "Intent to Enroll" form.  Please visit https://www.virginia529.com.

  2. A list of participants in the Prepaid529 plan is sent to us from Virginia529 prior to the start of classes for fall and spring semesters.

  3. A pending credit will be placed on your student account until payment is received. (Students wanting to use Virginia529 benefits for summer or winter term classes should contact Virginia529 toll free at 1-888-567-0540 to discuss payment options).

The maximum amount Prepaid529 will pay is capped at the full-time undergraduate rate (12 hours).

Option 2: Invest529

  1. Submit a Distribution Request Form  to the Virginia529 office either online or by mail at least 10 days prior to payment deadline.

    1. Indicate the amount you are requesting to be paid from Virginia529 to Virginia Tech.

    2. The School Identification Number requested on the form is the student's Virginia Tech ID number.

  2. If you are an Invest529 participant or you roll your investment from the Prepaid529 plan to the Invest529 plan, payment will be sent to Virginia Tech by Virginia529 after your form is received.

Delays in Payment
Since payment from the Invest529 plan may be received near or after the payment deadline, students could receive a late fee or hold if a copy of the request form has not been received by our office prior to the payment deadline. A "Hold" simply means that the student cannot access their account on the Hokie SPA to view their student account or make changes to their class schedule. If you have questions about the Hold on your account, please contact the office of the University Bursar by email bursar@vt.edu, or call 540-231-6277.

Updates to Account Statements
Electronic billing notifications will be available to you monthly showing any new account activity and the pending credit until the actual payment is received from Virginia529. If you are a Invest529 participant and have already sent us a copy of your distribution request form for the semester, you should pay any additional amount you owe not covered by the pending credit from your Invest529 account.

If you have notified Virginia529 by sending them an "Intent to Enroll" form to let them know which college or university you are attending, your name will be on the roster of participants we receive in early July each year.

No. Prepaid529 will only pay normal tuition and fee charges that every university student receives. Not fees specific to a course or major.

Once we receive the roster, a pending credit for the amount of tuition and fees is entered on each student account. You will see the pending credit on your bill and also on the Hokie SPA. As long as all charges other than tuition and fees are paid or covered by scholarships or loans and there is not an amount due by the payment deadline, you should not have a hold or late fee and your classes are protected.

The maximum amount Prepaid529 will pay is in-state undergraduate tuition, library, technology and comprehensive fees capped at the full-time Blacksburg campus rate (12 hours).

We receive a roster of all Prepaid529 participants each semester (approximately the first week of July for Fall semester and the first week of December for Spring semester). When you receive your bill, you will see a Prepaid529 pending credit on your account for the amount of tuition and fees. The amount due for room, board, and any other charges will be reflected in the balance.

No, you only have to send it the first time you enroll unless you leave the university and re-enroll later. In that case, you would need to send in another form.

Yes, you need to request the amount of distribution you want sent to us every semester.

Yes. If you have sent your distribution request to Virginia529, we will be notified within 10 days of the date the request was received by them. If you are late requesting your distribution, or you have made the request less than 10 days prior to a statement due date, you may be subject to a late payment penalty.

You should use the nine-digit Student ID number assigned to you by Virginia Tech which normally begins with 904, 905 or 906.

If you have enrolled in classes for credit at Virginia Tech and have tuition charges on your student account, we can bill Virginia Prepaid529 for tuition and fees you owe to Virginia Tech.

Non-Virginia 529 Plans & Investment Fund Payments

Submit your distribution request form per vendor instructions and include the Virginia Tech student ID number for reference, allowing enough time for vendor remittance before payment deadline.

All payments are posted daily upon receipt and can be viewed online in the account summary.  Pending credit will be entered on the student account to cover the amount requested until payment is received from authorized prepaid tuition accounts upon notification from the state or vendor plans.
