Description of Fees
Room and Board
Paid by all students living in University residence halls. This combined fee covers residence hall and dining hall operational expenses and includes costs for debt services on these facilities. Costs vary according to residence halls and dining plans. Students living in university residence halls may choose among a variety of dining plans offered by the university-operated dining halls. Residence hall rooms are not available without board; however, dining plans are available to students who live off campus.
Academic Fee
Non-refundable mandatory fee for all students which helps offset decreasing state support from the Commonwealth of Virginia, helps to ensure the competitiveness of faculty salaries, helps ensure the availability of course sections, and seeks to enhance the overall quality of the institution's educational and general programs.
Technology Fee
Non-refundable mandatory fee for all students, both graduate and undergraduate, for support of technology initiatives for students.
Capital and Equipment Fee
Non-refundable mandatory fee for all non-Virginia residents, as required by the 2003 General Assembly for debt service on bonds issued under the 21st Century Program, and for support of the Higher Education Equipment Trust Fund as required by the 2004 General Assembly.
Health Service Fee
Non-refundable mandatory fee for all students in residence paying full tuition; for normal medical and nursing attention and counseling services provided by Schiffert Health Center, counseling services provided by Cook Counseling Center, and support for the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad. Fee is applicable to both graduate and undergraduate students, but is optional for students paying less than the full tuition. Voluntary coverage is not available after the last day to add classes.
Athletic Fee
Non-refundable mandatory fee for all students in residence paying full tuition; for support of athletic program operations. This fee allows students the opportunity to enter an online lottery process for free student tickets for in-season home athletic events. Fee is applicable to both graduate and undergraduate students in residence, but is optional for students paying less than full tuition.
Student Activity Fee
Non-refundable mandatory fee for all students in residence, both graduate and undergraduate, for debt retirement, maintenance, and operation of the Student Centers and for support of Virginia Tech Union programs and various activities as determined by the Student Budget Board.
Bus Fee
Non-refundable mandatory fee for all students in residence, both graduate and undergraduate, for support of the Blacksburg Transit System. Entitles all enrolled students to board Blacksburg Transit System buses by showing their student ID card instead of paying the fare.
Recreational Sports Fee
Non-refundable mandatory fee for all students in residence, both graduate and undergraduate, for support of intramural and extramural sport club programs and recreational activities of the university which are coordinated by the Department of Recreational Sports.
Student Services Fee
Non-refundable mandatory fee for all students in residence, both graduate and undergraduate, for student support services including debt retirement, maintenance, and operation of the Career Service Facility and the Hokie Passport.
Program Fees
Engineering Fee
Undergraduate - A mandatory fee for all students enrolled in 1000, 2000 and 3000 level engineering and computer science courses.
Graduate - A mandatory fee for all graduate engineering students admitted to the program Fall semester 2007 or later.
The engineering fee is to ensure necessary resources to support modernization of instrumentations and materials for instructional laboratories and to ensure the effective maintenance of instrumentation and technology in the daily operation of the laboratories including improvements to instructional space and facilities.
Architecture and Design Fee
The fee is used to support costs unique to Architecture and Design students including: the continuing need for modernization of equipment and instrumentation for instructional studios and student projects, staffing needs of the studios, requiring upgrades to instructional space, and adequate staff support to ensure the effective maintenance of equipment and technology in the daily operation of the instructional studio.
National Capital Region Masters of Landscape Architecture (NCR MLA Program) Fee
Mandatory fee for all students entering this program after Spring 2007 and before Fall 2008 at the National Capital Region location. This fee supports the expansion and enhancement of this high quality program.
Vet Med Facility Fee
Non-refundable mandatory fee for all veterinary students which will be used for instructional space improvements.
MIT Fee
This mandatory fee for classes in the Masters of Information Technology program supports the cost of developing, maintaining, and delivering a high quality and cutting edge integration of business, engineering, and computer science curriculum in a rapidly changing technological environment.
Additional Fees
Matriculation Fee
A $400.00 fee is required of all freshmen and transfer students at the time they accept the offer of admission. $260 of this fee will be credited to the student's semester bill.
The remainder of the total $400 ($140) is an orientation fee and is non-refundable. Students may receive a refund of the remainder of the fee ($260.00) if they withdraw their acceptance of the offer of admission and submit a written request for a refund prior to May 1 of the year in which they will enroll, if admitted for the fall semester (November 1 if admitted for the spring semester).
Application Fee
The non-refundable application fee for freshmen and transfer students is $50. The non-refundable fee for all international students is $70.
Student ID Card Fee
All students are required to have a Virginia Tech student identification card. The original card is free when made during regular registration or a specially scheduled period. There is a replacement card fee, payable at the Hokie Passport Office in the Student Services Buildling, when the replacement card is made.
Special Examination Fee
Charge per credit hour for advanced credit examination.
Audit Fee
Students are assessed the same rate for tuition and fees for auditing courses as for courses taken for credit.
Late Payment Fee
Late payment fees of 10% of the past due balance (not to exceed $100 per term) will be assessed to students who have not paid or do not have sufficient financial aid or other credit to cover institutional charges.
Reinstatement Fee
Charged to any student whose classes have been dropped for non-payment of tuition and fees and who is given permission by his or her dean to add classes after the add deadline.
Cooperative Education Program Industry Fee for Undergraduates
Charge for each term a student is placed in industry employment while enrolled in the Cooperative Education Program.
